CitraBlue grass was developed by the University of Florida’s turfgrass breeding program under a sponsored Research Service Agreement with the Turfgrass Producers of Florida, Inc. (TPF). Bitter Blue has a very coarse texture. It is a darker green color than common St. Augustine grasses. It is an improved variety of St. Augustine for cold and shade tolerant areas. Although it grows well in both sun and shade, Bitter Blue still requires regular maintenanceand is susceptible to pests such as chinch bugs and fungal diseases like brown patch.

Zoysia is a type of lawngrass becoming more popular in Florida lawns. It's dark green, and shorter and finer textured than St. Augustine grass. Zoysia grass is adapted to a variety of soils and it is ideal for high-traffic areas like backyards or sports fields. It holds up well under foot traffic and recovers quickly from damage. Zoysia is generally resistant to many pests and diseases that affect other turfgrasses, though it can be susceptible to fungal issues in overly wet or humid environments.

Floratam St. Augustine sod was developed specifically for warmer climates and performs best with full sun, making it ideal for southern regions. It struggles in shaded environments and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Floratam is coarse-textured with longer grass blades that are thicker and wider. Floratam grows quickly making it a good option when wanting to establish a lawn fast but it requires more frequent mowing. Floratam is the most used home lawn in all of Florida as it was developed with increased resistance to chinch bugs and diseases like St. Augustine decline (SAD). However, it can still be vulnerable to other fungal diseases, especially in wet conditions.
